1763 Monument

Bold bronze statue of Cuffy, leader of the 1763 slave rebellion

A heroic, slightly confrontational bronze statue at the entrance to the National Park, the 1763 Monument commemorates Cuffy, the enslaved African who led the Berbice rebellion against Dutch plantation owners in 1763. The work is by the Guyanese sculptor Philip Moore, who chose to depict Cuffy as a powerful nude figure — a deliberate rejection of conventional colonial heroic statuary.

The statue stands roughly five metres high and dominates its plaza. It is one of the most important pieces of public art in Guyana and a useful starting point for understanding the country's complex relationship with its colonial past. Republic Day ceremonies on 23 February centre here.

A story
Cuffy led the Berbice slave uprising of 1763, one of the earliest large-scale revolts in the Americas. The rebellion held much of the colony for almost a year before being defeated. Cuffy is now Guyana's national hero, depicted here as a defiant nude figure by sculptor Philip Moore.
