Botanic Gardens

120-acre tropical gardens with manatees and giant water lilies

One hundred and twenty acres of palms, orchids, lotus lilies, and tropical hardwoods on the southeastern edge of the city. The gardens were established in 1879 and are still a genuinely pleasant place — wide paths, old trees, a pond with manatees, and a small zoo at one end. Go in the morning before the heat builds. There is almost always a cool breeze off the nearby canals. The giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, in flower from around October to April, are worth timing a visit around.

A story
The Victoria amazonica water lily, native to the Guianas and Amazon, holds the record for the world's largest floating leaves — up to three metres across, capable of supporting a small child. The Botanic Gardens' lily ponds are one of the easiest places anywhere to see them in flower.
