Queenstown Jama Mosque

Striking green-and-white mosque in the Queenstown ward

The Queenstown Jama Masjid is the most distinctive of Georgetown's mosques, with green domes, white minarets, and an elaborate Mughal-inspired facade that stands out among the surrounding wooden colonial buildings. Built in the late nineteenth century and rebuilt several times since, it serves the city's substantial Indo-Guyanese Muslim community.

Visitors are welcome outside prayer times if appropriately dressed. The combination of South Asian Islamic architecture set against Caribbean palms and Victorian wood is a reminder of how thoroughly Guyana's Indian indentured labourers transformed the country's cultural landscape after 1838.
