Andagua

Remote Arequipa highland village and base for Peru's black-lava Valley of the Volcanoes.

Andagua is a remote highland village in southern Peru, far northwest of Arequipa and well beyond the normal Colca Canyon circuit. Its reason for being on a travel map is the Valley of the Volcanoes: a strange black-and-green landscape of small volcanic cones, lava flows, terraced fields, and dry Andean slopes.

The village is simple and practical rather than polished. That is part of the bargain. You come here because the landscape is extraordinary, because the Mirador Antaymarca gives a superb overview of the valley, and because nearby volcanic cones such as Puca Mauras make the geology feel close enough to touch.

Andagua needs time and tolerance for rough transport. If you are already in Arequipa or Colca country and want a stranger, quieter Andean trip, it is much more than a gateway village.
