The Elisabeth Samson House is a restored colonial mansion in the historic centre of Paramaribo, associated with the extraordinary free Black woman of that name who became one of the colony's wealthiest citizens in the 18th century. The building is one of the finest examples of Dutch colonial domestic architecture in the city.
Samson's story is remarkable: born to a freed enslaved woman and a white overseer, she eventually owned multiple plantations and fought the colonial legal system for the right to marry a white man, winning a landmark decision. The house and its association with her is a small but significant part of Paramaribo's complicated social history. The building is occasionally open for visits; check locally.
