Lalla Rookh Museum

Community museum tracing Indo-Surinamese migration, indenture, farming, religion, and family life

Named for the ship that brought the first group of indentured workers from British India in 1873, the Lalla Rookh Museum traces Indo-Surinamese history from recruitment and plantation labour through farming, family life, religion, and the present.

It is outside the historic centre and has limited public hours. Confirm before going; groups may need an appointment. The collection fills an essential gap in a city tour otherwise dominated by Dutch colonial buildings.
