Martin Luther Church

Lutheran church serving the German and Dutch Protestant community since the colonial era

The Martin Luther Church is one of the older Lutheran churches in Suriname, a reminder that the German Lutheran community had a small but distinct presence in the colonial capital alongside the dominant Dutch Reformed congregation. The building is a modest colonial wooden structure near the waterfront, easily overlooked but with its own place in Paramaribo's layered religious history.

The church is rarely open to casual visitors but is worth noting as part of a walk along the waterfront. Paramaribo's extraordinary density of houses of worship — within a few blocks you can count a Lutheran church, a Dutch Reformed church, a Moravian church, two synagogues, a mosque, and a Roman Catholic cathedral — is one of the things that makes the city genuinely unlike anywhere else in the world.
