The Estadio Olímpico de la Ciudad Universitaria — the football stadium of the Universidad Central — was designed by Carlos Raúl Villanueva in the early 1950s as part of his master plan for the campus. The reinforced-concrete grandstand, with its long sweeping cantilever roof, is one of the great pieces of Latin American modernist sports architecture and is included in the UNESCO listing of the Ciudad Universitaria.
The adjacent Estadio Universitario, also by Villanueva, is the home of the Tiburones and Leones baseball teams. Both stadiums are still in active use; during the season, attending a Caracas Leones game is a more interesting Caracas evening than most of what is available downtown.
