Parque Los Caobos

The oldest public park in Caracas, opened in 1920 on what had been the hacienda of the Sanz family. The name comes from the rows of caoba (mahogany) trees planted along the original allées; many of the original specimens are still standing, with trunks now well over a metre across. The park is laid out in a French style with formal paths, statues of cultural figures, and a central fountain by the sculptor Ernesto Maragall.

The park sits between the Bellas Artes museum cluster to the east and the Plaza Venezuela to the west, and is the green link in the modernist Caracas of the mid-twentieth century. By day it is one of the safer centre-Caracas places to walk; avoid it after dark.
