Boulevard of Sabana Grande

The Boulevard de Sabana Grande is the long pedestrian street that runs between Plaza Venezuela and Chacaíto along what used to be the route of the streetcar to the eastern suburbs. The boulevard was Caracas's premier shopping promenade through the 1950s and 1960s, before the rise of the indoor malls of Chacao further east; the Gran Café at the corner of Pascual Navarro, the literary café of the Sabana Grande Generation of the late 1950s, is still there and still serves a good cortado.

The boulevard today is busier and rougher than in its golden age — clothing stores, electronics stalls, juice bars, money changers — but it remains the closest thing Caracas has to a pedestrian high street, and is reliably walkable by day with three metro stations along its length.
