Limbe

Atlantic beach town near Douala, known for black volcanic sand and a low-key waterfront.

Limbe is a beach town on Cameroon's Atlantic coast, about an hour by road from Douala. It fills up at weekends with city dwellers escaping the heat and traffic, but during the week it is a relaxed, low-key place.

The beach in town itself is too rocky for swimming, but Mile Six beach has good black volcanic sand and is free of the oil that mars some stretches of coastline. A handful of restaurants and small hotels line the waterfront. Bush taxis from Douala leave from Boulevard de la Reunification and take about an hour.
