Dokki is a residential and commercial neighbourhood on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, directly across from central Cairo. It's an upscale area by Egyptian standards, home to a mix of embassies, international organisations, and middle-class apartment blocks. The streets are leafy and less chaotic than downtown Cairo, making it a reasonable base if you want proximity to the city without being in the thick of it.
Cairo University sits nearby, and the neighbourhood has a lively café and restaurant scene along its main streets. Dokki connects easily to the rest of Cairo — the metro runs through it, and Tahrir Square is just across the river.
Two museums make Dokki worth visiting in its own right: the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum holds an extraordinary private collection of French Impressionist paintings in a Nile-view villa, and the Agricultural Museum occupies a former royal palace and covers Egyptian farming history with a combination of genuine scholarship and accidental surrealism. The Orman Garden, a shaded botanical garden near Cairo University, is one of the best places in the city to escape the heat and the noise.
