The Asmara Brewery was set up by Italians in 1939 and is still producing Asmara Beer — the local lager that is the default drink across Eritrea. The original brewhouse, in the western quarter of the city, has the unmistakable look of late-1930s Italian industrial architecture: pale stuccoed walls, rounded corners, a tall chimney.
Tours are not routine but groups can sometimes be accommodated by arrangement. The easier way to experience the brewery is to drink a bottle of Asmara Beer at any bar in town — it is the cheapest and most reliably available beer in the country.
