Cinema Dante

A more modest contemporary of the Cinema Impero, the Cinema Dante was built in the late 1930s on a corner block in central Asmara. Its facade is a small but well-preserved piece of Rationalist design, with a streamlined corner and a recessed entrance.

The cinema is no longer in regular use as a film theatre, but the lobby is sometimes accessible and the exterior is worth a slight detour off Liberation Avenue. It is one of around two dozen 1930s cinemas in Asmara — a strikingly high concentration for a city of this size.
