Martyrs' Cemetery (Patriots' Cemetery)

A large cemetery on the southwestern edge of the city centre that holds the dead of the long Eritrean independence war (1961–1991). Endless rows of small white headstones, each with a name and a date, climb up a hillside above the city; a tall central obelisk marks the entrance.

The site is open and free, and is one of the more affecting places to visit in Asmara. The names alone — page after page of them on memorial walls — give a sense of the cost of independence. Dress respectfully and be quiet around any family visitors.
