Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Centre

Crafts cooperative employing artisans with disabilities

Bombolulu Workshops is a craft-and-jewellery cooperative on the road to Nyali that has been run by the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya since the 1960s. About 150 craftspeople — most of them living with disabilities — work in workshops producing leather goods, fabrics, wood carvings, and brass jewellery, and visitors can wander between them to watch the work and buy at fixed, fair prices. There is a small traditional cultural village with reconstructed huts and dance performances at scheduled times. A worthwhile detour from the beach hotels, and a more honest place to buy souvenirs than the airport.
