Mandhry Mosque

The oldest mosque in Mombasa, built around 1570

The small, white-washed Mandhry Mosque on Mbarak Hinawy Road in Old Town is the oldest functioning mosque in Mombasa — local tradition dates it to 1570, when the Swahili coast was still under Portuguese control. The exterior is plain coral-rag with a short minaret, but the doorway and the carved wooden details on the windows show the quiet craftsmanship that runs through the whole quarter. Non-Muslims should not enter, but the lane outside is one of the prettiest spots in Old Town and the perfect place to hear the dawn call to prayer.
