The Holy Ghost Cathedral on Digo Road is the principal Catholic church in Mombasa and the seat of the archbishop. Consecrated in 1923 and finished in a slightly Romanesque red-brick style with a tall belltower, it makes a striking contrast with the white-washed mosques and coral-rag houses elsewhere in the city. The interior is cool and quiet, with simple stained glass, and the gardens out front are a welcome shaded retreat from the heat of downtown.
