Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary is a community conservation area inland from the coast, created to protect an elephant migration corridor between Shimba Hills and the Mwaluganje forest. It is a rougher, quieter wildlife outing than the better-known parks, but that is part of the appeal.
Expect a day-trip rather than a quick city sight. Roads and animal sightings can be variable, so it works best for travelers who want a conservation-minded detour from Mombasa and are comfortable with a less polished reserve experience.
