Lake Nakuru National Park

flamingo-filled alkaline lake and rhino sanctuary

The shallow alkaline lake on Nakuru's southern edge is the city's defining sight. Its salty, algae-rich water has long supported huge flocks of lesser flamingos — at peak, the shoreline turns solid pink — though the population has fluctuated in recent years as water levels have risen and the algae has thinned. The 188-square-kilometre fenced park around the lake is one of Kenya's two rhino sanctuaries: more than 70 white rhinos and around 25 black rhinos live here, alongside Rothschild's giraffe, lion, leopard, buffalo, and waterbuck. The main gate is about 4 km from the town centre.
