Menengai Crater

One of the world's largest calderas, steaming and walkable from Nakuru.

An extinct shield volcano about 8 km north of town, Menengai is one of the largest calderas in the world — roughly 12 km across and 480 metres deep. You can drive to the rim along Menengai Drive, off Showground Road, or walk it in a couple of hours. The view across the forested floor is dramatic, with steam still rising from vents far below. There are no guardrails and the trails down into the caldera are unmarked, so go with care; locals also use the caves at the bottom for fasting and prayer.
