A story
Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour intended it to be the minaret of the largest mosque in the world. He died in 1199 before it was finished; at 44 metres, it stands at less than half its planned height. The earthquake of 1755 toppled what was built of the mosque itself, leaving only the columns.
