Sale Medina

Walled medina across the Bou Regreg from Rabat, quieter and more local than the capital's old town

Sale's medina sits just across the river from Rabat but feels like a separate town, with a more workaday rhythm and fewer visitors. The lanes are narrower, the markets more local, and the Atlantic-side ramparts give the old city a rougher edge than Rabat's tidier monuments.

Come by tram or taxi, then wander without trying to tick off too much. The Marinid madrasa, the Great Mosque area, gates, and ramparts are the main anchors, but the real appeal is seeing the twin-city relationship from the Sale side of the Bou Regreg.
