Guided Bush Walks

Several rest camps in Kruger offer guided morning and afternoon bush walks with armed SANParks rangers. These walks are fundamentally different from game drives: you move slowly and quietly, cover a relatively small area, and pay close attention to tracks, droppings, insects, plants, and the small signs of animal presence that game drives miss entirely. You may see very little large wildlife, or you may round a corner and find yourself thirty metres from a white rhino.

The morning walks typically depart at sunrise and last three to four hours. Numbers are limited to eight people, and a minimum fitness level is required. The bush walk experience is available from Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Satara, Olifants, and several other camps. For visitors who have done game drives before and want something different, a bush walk is the most direct way to change your relationship to the landscape.

A story
Walking in Kruger is not a casual activity. SANParks rangers who lead bush walks carry rifles and are qualified to deal with dangerous animal encounters, which do occasionally occur. The protocol when meeting an elephant or lion on foot is very different to what you would do in a vehicle — your guide's instructions must be followed immediately and without question. The tension this creates is part of what makes a bush walk so memorable.
