Thulamela

Stone-walled archaeological site in northern Kruger linked to a precolonial trading kingdom.

Thulamela is a reminder that Kruger is not only a wildlife reserve. In the far north of the park, the stone-walled hilltop settlement was part of a sophisticated precolonial society connected to trade routes that reached the Indian Ocean. Gold objects, beads, and other finds point to a world of cattle, craft, status, and exchange long before modern park boundaries existed.

Visits are usually guided, which is the right way to see it. The ruins themselves are modest compared with Great Zimbabwe, but the setting gives them weight: baobabs, dry northern bushveld, and broad views over a landscape that people have moved through for centuries. It is one of Kruger's best stops for travellers who want human history alongside animals.
