Skukuza Rest Camp

Skukuza is Kruger's main hub and its largest rest camp, sitting on the south bank of the Sabie River near some of the park's best game country. The Sabie River corridor supports exceptional lion, leopard, and elephant populations, and the roads around Skukuza — particularly the river roads toward Lower Sabie — consistently produce good sightings. The camp itself has a full range of facilities: accommodation from campsites to bungalows to safari tents, a supermarket, two restaurants, a library, and even a car hire desk and petrol station.

The H1-2 road between Skukuza and Lower Sabie is justifiably one of the most celebrated game-drive roads in South Africa. It follows the Sabie River through a mix of open grassland and riparian forest, and on any given morning you might pass elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, hippo, and crocodile. Leopards are regularly seen in the trees along the riverbank. The camp's own waterhole, visible from the public terrace, attracts elephant and other visitors at night.

A story
Skukuza, the largest camp in Kruger, is named after the Zulu nickname of Colonel James Stevenson-Hamilton, Kruger's first warden, who served from 1902 to 1946. The name means "he who sweeps clean" — a reference to his aggressive removal of poachers and illegal hunters from the area. Stevenson-Hamilton championed the creation of the national park against fierce opposition from farmers and hunters, and is largely responsible for the park existing in its current form.
