Lower Sabie Camp

Lower Sabie is one of Kruger's most beloved camps, set on the banks of the Sabie River near where it approaches the Mozambique border. The setting is excellent — game comes to the river in front of the camp, and the terrace restaurant is a fine place to watch elephants drinking at dusk. The camp is smaller and more intimate than Skukuza, with a strong sense of the bush right outside the fence.

The roads around Lower Sabie are consistently productive. The river roads east toward Crocodile Bridge and west toward Skukuza are reliable for lion and leopard, and the more open terrain around the H10 road (which links Lower Sabie to the Satara area) is good for cheetah. The dam outside the camp fence attracts hippos and crocodiles year-round and is excellent for waterbirds. Book well in advance — Lower Sabie is one of the most popular camps in the park.

A story
The lion population in Kruger's southern district has been studied continuously since the 1970s, producing one of the world's most detailed long-term datasets on wild lions. Researchers have found that lion prides here have unusually large territories compared to lions in East Africa — partly because of the lower prey density in parts of the Kruger ecosystem, and partly because of the more closed bush habitat that makes cooperative hunting less important.
