Satara Rest Camp

Satara is the best camp in Kruger for the open-bush experience that most people associate with African safari. It sits in the central district, in relatively flat, open thornveld where sightlines are wide and wildlife — particularly lion — is frequently visible from the road. The H7 road west of Satara and the Nwanetsi area to the east are consistently among the most productive drives in the entire park.

The camp is large and well-equipped, with accommodation ranging from camping to fully equipped cottages. The communal swimming pool (a feature of several major Kruger camps) is a relief after a hot morning drive. Night drives from Satara are among the best in the park — the guides know the local prides' territories well, and seeing lion after dark, free from the restriction of other vehicles, is a different experience altogether from the day-drive version.

A story
The Satara area lies at the heart of Kruger's central district, which is renowned for the highest lion density in the park. The open thornveld around Satara supports enormous herds of zebra, wildebeest, and impala — ideal prey for prides that hunt cooperatively in the open. The famous Shishangaan lion pride, which at its peak numbered over 20 individuals, operated in this territory for years and was one of the largest prides ever documented in the wild.
