Luzhou Old Street

Luzhou Old Street in the Luyang District preserves the closest thing Hefei has to a traditional commercial streetscape — a restored section of late Qing and Republican-era shophouses with carved wooden facades, overhanging eaves, and the kind of narrow, covered arcade that was once the standard form of Chinese urban retail. The restoration is thorough rather than authentic (most of the buildings have been rebuilt rather than preserved), but the result is livelier than many such projects because the street remains genuinely commercial.

Tea shops, calligraphy supply merchants, antique dealers, and snack vendors occupy the restored frontages, and the surrounding residential lanes have not been entirely sanitized — you can still find older residents going about ordinary life just off the main strip. Worth an hour in the afternoon.
