University of Science and Technology of China

The USTC campus in Shushan District is China's most celebrated science university, responsible for more Fields Medals, top physics breakthroughs, and quantum computing advances per square meter than almost anywhere else in Asia. The campus is pleasant to walk — tree-lined paths, Soviet-era institutional buildings alongside newer research facilities, and the comfortable academic atmosphere of a place where serious work is being done.

The campus museum includes an exhibit on the HT-7 fusion tokamak, the experimental reactor that operated here for decades and helped establish China's position in controlled fusion research. The Guo Moruo Memorial — dedicated to the poet and paleographer who was the university's founding president — occupies a quiet corner of the campus and is worth a brief stop for those interested in the intersection of Chinese literary and scientific modernization.

A story
USTC was founded in Beijing in 1958 as China's prestige science university, directly modeled on the Soviet Academy of Sciences institutes. During the Cultural Revolution it was relocated to Hefei — considered a safer interior location — in 1969, taking its entire faculty into provincial exile. The move that looked like a demotion proved transformative: USTC became one of the world's leading quantum physics research centers, and it was here in 2017 that Chinese scientists achieved the first satellite-based quantum key distribution.
