Shushan Lake Wetland Park on the western edge of the city is one of Hefei's better natural retreats — a restored wetland of several square kilometers where reed beds, open water, and woodland strips have been managed to create genuine habitat for waterbirds alongside paths and viewing platforms for visitors. In spring and autumn migration periods, the bird counts are impressive: egrets, herons, cormorants, and a range of duck species are regular.
The park is less manicured than the central city parks, which is part of its appeal — the edges have a genuinely marshy character that feels removed from the surrounding urban density. The boardwalks through the reed beds are the best sections. Early morning visits are recommended, as the birds are most active before the day-trippers arrive.
