Xiaoyaojin Park

Xiaoyaojin Park marks the site of one of the Three Kingdoms period's most celebrated battles: the 215 CE engagement where Cao Wei general Zhang Liao, massively outnumbered, launched a dawn raid that routed Sun Quan's force and became one of the most retold stories of the era. The park today is primarily a recreational green space used by residents, with a statue of Zhang Liao on horseback as its focal point.

For visitors with a knowledge of the Three Kingdoms period, the site has genuine atmosphere — this is where many of the events they know from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (or the television adaptations) actually occurred. For visitors without that context, the park is a pleasant urban green space good for an hour's stroll, with lotus ponds, pavilions, and plenty of local life. It's one of the most popular spots in Hefei for morning exercise.

A story
The Battle of Xiaoyao Ford in 215 CE was a catastrophic defeat for Sun Quan, the ruler of Eastern Wu. Zhang Liao, commanding a force of just 800 troops against an army of 100,000, led a surprise attack at dawn that so shocked the Wu forces that Sun Quan himself barely escaped. The site of the ford has been commemorated ever since — for over eighteen centuries, this patch of ground in central Hefei has carried the weight of that improbable story.
