Haikou's sights are modest in scale but rich in texture. The Bo'ai Road qilou district is the most evocative part of the old town, where arcaded shophouses built by returned overseas Chinese create a street scene unlike anywhere else in China. Beyond the old town, a handful of temples, tombs, and a well-preserved coastal fort give the city more historical depth than most visitors expect.
