Culture Square (Wenhua Guangchang) is one of the largest public squares in Changchun, a vast open space that traces its origins to the Manchukuo era when it was the central ceremonial space of the planned capital. The current design is post-1949, with the standard Chinese civic square elements: monument, flagpoles, ornamental planting, and a surrounding zone of government and cultural buildings.
The square is used for public gatherings, outdoor concerts during summer cultural events, and the daily activities — kite flying, tai chi groups, cycling children — that give Chinese public spaces their most genuine character. In winter, ice skating is sometimes arranged on the square's flat surface. The scale is considerable enough to walk across and feel the ambition of the original urban plan that the space represents.
