Jilin Ethnic Museum

The Jilin Ethnic Museum documents the cultural history of the non-Han peoples who have lived in Jilin Province — Manchu, Korean, Mongolian, Hui, and other groups whose presence predates and extends beyond the Chinese state. The collections include traditional clothing, tools, ritual objects, and everyday items from communities whose cultural practices were significantly disrupted by twentieth-century events.

The Manchu materials are particularly significant: Jilin was the heartland of Manchu identity before the dynasty's assimilation into Han culture made the distinction largely academic for daily life. What survives — shamanic objects, traditional dress, architectural models — represents a culture that chose erasure by choice and circumstance rather than conquest.
