Tianjin Eye

120-metre Ferris wheel built directly into the Yongle Bridge over the Hai River

The Tianjin Eye is a 120-metre Ferris wheel mounted directly onto the Yongle Bridge spanning the Hai River. This is one of a handful of bridge-mounted Ferris wheels in the world, and arguably the most dramatic — the gondolas extend over the water on both sides, giving riders views up and down the river while the bridge traffic passes below.

The wheel has 48 gondolas, each holding up to eight people, and takes about 30 minutes for a full rotation. At night it is lit up in changing colours and becomes one of the most visible landmarks on the river. The surrounding riverside walkway makes for a good evening stroll before or after riding, with food stalls and small restaurants clustered on both banks.

A story
The Tianjin Eye is one of the world's few Ferris wheels built into the structure of a working bridge. When the gondolas swing out over the river, you're effectively hanging above boat traffic flowing beneath you. The wheel opened in 2009 and quickly became the city's most photographed structure — unusual given that Tianjin has no shortage of remarkable buildings.
