Lingyin Si (Temple of Inspired Seclusion)

Ancient Hangzhou temple with 20m Buddha and cliffside rock carvings

Founded in 326 AD by an Indian Buddhist monk, Lingyin Si has been destroyed and rebuilt 16 times over the centuries — the current halls date largely from the Qing dynasty. The main draw is a 20-metre camphor-wood Sakyamuni statue carved in 1956, one of the largest in China. Outside the main gate, the cliffs of Feilai Feng are covered with hundreds of Buddhist rock carvings dating from the 10th to 14th centuries, worth spending an hour exploring.
