Saranta Kolones

Ruined Byzantine and Crusader castle inside the archaeological park

A tumbled heap of basalt and limestone inside the archaeological park, "Saranta Kolones" — Forty Columns — is what is left of a Byzantine fortress that the Crusaders later rebuilt as a Lusignan castle. An earthquake flattened it in 1222 and it was never repaired. The granite columns scattered across the site were reused from earlier Roman structures.

The ruin is the highest point in the park and a good place to get your bearings before walking down to the villas and the harbour.
