Nagin Lake

Nagin Lake is the smaller, quieter companion to Dal Lake, separated from it by a narrow causeway on the northern end. The name means "gem set in a ring," a reference to the ring of mountains encircling it. The lake is shallower and cleaner than Dal, with a reputation for better water quality and a more tranquil atmosphere — fewer tourist boats, quieter houseboats, and the feeling of being slightly removed from the main tourist circuit.

Several of the better houseboats on Nagin operate at a higher standard than equivalent-priced options on the main Dal Lake shore, partly because the location attracts a slightly different clientele. Water skiing is available on Nagin — it has the most suitable open water in the Srinagar lake system. The surrounding bank has a pleasant walking path through willow groves. If you want the houseboat experience without the intensity of the Boulevard Road strip, Nagin is the recommended alternative. Getting into the city from Nagin requires a shikara or auto-rickshaw, which adds some inconvenience.
