Roza Bal — "the Exalted Tomb" — is a small Sufi shrine in the Khanyar neighbourhood of the old city. The tomb is officially that of Yuz Asaf, a medieval prophet or holy man, alongside that of a 14th-century Muslim missionary Nasruddin. It would be a minor local shrine except for a claim that began circulating in the late 19th century: that Yuz Asaf is in fact Jesus Christ, who (in this theory) survived the crucifixion, travelled east, reached Kashmir, preached here for decades, and died at a great age in Srinagar. A German banker named Holger Kersten popularised this claim in a 1983 book.
The mainstream archaeological and historical view is that this is legend with no credible evidence. The shrine's custodians have repeatedly tried to have it closed to non-Muslim visitors to prevent it becoming a tourist circus, and access has been restricted at various times. When open, the outer courtyard is visitable. The neighbourhood around Khanyar is worth walking through regardless — it is one of the more intact parts of the old city, with traditional wooden houses and a lived-in character absent from the main tourist circuits.
