Mecca Masjid

Small, ornamented mosque traditionally reserved for the royal women

A small, finely detailed mosque inside the citadel, traditionally said to have been used exclusively by the women of the royal household. The proportions are tighter than the Jama Masjid — a single domed prayer hall with three arches at the front — but the stone carving is some of the most refined in the city, particularly the screens that would have shielded the worshippers from view.

The mosque is named for Mecca because earth from the holy city was supposedly mixed into its foundations. Free to visit; rarely crowded.
