The Siddhwat temple in Bhairavgarh, on the northern outskirts of Ujjain, is centred on a large sacred banyan tree (the Vat) on the bank of the Kshipra. The tree is considered a manifestation of Shiva and is connected in local legend to the wandering of souls after death — making it a site of particular importance for death rituals and ancestor worship.
Devotees tie threads to the banyan's aerial roots in prayer, and the tree has grown into a vast, spreading form over centuries of veneration. The temple around it is modest by Ujjain standards, but the atmosphere is unusually quiet — pilgrims come here for specific ritual purposes rather than the mass darshan of the major temples.
The temple is a short auto-rickshaw ride north of the city centre, near the Kal Bhairav temple. The combination of both sites makes a logical half-day excursion.
