Sanitary Garden

The Sanitary Garden, sometimes called Kala Sagar ("Ocean of Art"), is a small, easy-to-miss installation tucked away in Sector 38 that takes Nek Chand's idea — making art out of urban waste — and pushes it to its uncomfortable conclusion. The wall and the sculptures here are built almost entirely from broken toilet bowls, urinals and sanitary fittings.

It is not large and not signposted from far away, but for visitors fascinated by Chandigarh's tradition of subversive folk art it is worth half an hour. Free entry; ask at the colony gate.

A story
The Sanitary Garden is the work of architect Sarbjit Bahga, who collected discarded toilets, ceramic insulators and sanitary fittings from across Chandigarh and built them into a wall and a series of sculptures — a deliberate echo of Nek Chand's Rock Garden but with an even more provocative palette.
