The Akbari Fort was built in 1570 by the emperor Akbar as a base for his Rajasthan campaigns and as a residence on his frequent pilgrimages to the Dargah. The square stone fort has thick walls and four corner bastions, and now houses the Ajmer State Museum.
The collection inside is uneven — sculpture from local sites, weapons, miniature paintings, and a room reconstructing the meeting between Jahangir and Sir Thomas Roe — but the fort itself is worth seeing. Closed Fridays.
