Mayo College

Mayo College sits on the southern outskirts of Ajmer in 87 acres of grounds, dominated by its striking white marble main building. The main building and the small museum inside are sometimes open to visitors with prior permission from the school office; even the exterior, glimpsed from the road, is one of the great pieces of late-19th-century architecture in north India.

The school's old boys include several maharajas and a number of well-known Indian writers and politicians.

A story
Founded in 1875 by Lord Mayo, the Viceroy of India, as an Eton for the sons of Rajput princes, the school's main building was designed in a flamboyant Indo-Saracenic style by Charles Mant — all white marble onion domes, jali screens and curved chhajja eaves. It is still one of the most prestigious boys' boarding schools in India.
