High above Ajmer on the Nag Pahar hills, Taragarh — the Star Fort — was one of the oldest hill forts in Rajasthan, founded in the 8th century by the Chauhan dynasty. Most of it is ruined now: long stretches of crenellated wall, fragments of bastions, a deep stepwell, and the dargah of Miran Sahib at the summit.
The road up from the Dargah area is rough; a rickshaw will manage it. The view of Ajmer spread out below and Pushkar Lake glinting in the next valley is one of the highlights of a visit.
