Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal

The Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal — National Dalit Inspiration Site — is an enormous red sandstone memorial complex built between 2007 and 2011 during the chief ministership of Mayawati. The 33-hectare park commemorates leaders of the Dalit movement, including B.R. Ambedkar and the political philosopher Kanshi Ram, and features colossal statues, a domed hall and an extraordinary procession of 110 carved stone elephants.

Architecturally, the complex consciously echoes Mughal traditions of axial symmetry and red sandstone construction, but its scale is something else — closer to ancient Egypt than to anything contemporary in India. It became a major political flashpoint, criticised for its cost and praised for the prominent space it gives to Dalit history. Open during daylight hours; entry is free. Allow at least an hour.

A story
The Supreme Court of India ordered that the elephant sculptures be covered with tarpaulins during the 2012 state elections, on the grounds that the elephant is the BSP party's symbol and might unduly influence voters. The 110 stone elephants that line the memorial were duly shrouded.
