Hong Tiek Hian Temple is one of the better small stops in Surabaya's old north, where Chinese, Arab, Dutch, and Javanese histories overlap in a tight urban fabric. The temple is not large, but it gives a useful glimpse of the Chinese community that helped shape the port city.
Come while exploring the older quarters around Jembatan Merah and the harbour. The temple is active, so the best visit is unhurried and respectful: look at the carved details, incense, and courtyard life without treating it as a set piece.
