Masjid Ampel is the oldest mosque in Surabaya and one of the most important Islamic sites in East Java. It stands at the heart of the Arab quarter — Kampung Arab — reached through a covered bazaar on Jalan Ampel Suci that sells prayer beads, perfume, batik, and dates.
The mosque complex is busy at all times of day with worshippers and pilgrims, and the bazaar is worth an hour's wandering. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times; dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the mosque proper. The surrounding streets are good for watching daily life in one of Java's oldest trading communities.
