The Suramadu Bridge is the great modern landmark on Surabaya's northeastern edge, running across the Madura Strait to Bangkalan on Madura. Opened in 2009, the bridge stretches more than five kilometres and changed the practical relationship between the city and the island opposite it.
It is best experienced as a crossing rather than a place to linger. The cable-stayed central span gives broad views over shipping, mudflats, and the low coast, while the approach roads show how quickly Surabaya's urban edge gives way to the quieter Madurese side.
